The principle responsibility for arranging the internship rests with the student; however, we recommend the student seek out resources to assist them in the process. These resources include items such as the CCI Career Day, the Career Center, Seminole Futures, personal connections and faculty contacts. In general, students apply directly for an internship in the same way they would apply for a job, interviewing and presenting portfolios.
An internship is designed to provide the student with experience in a career-setting, some are paid and some are voluntary, unpaid activities. All internships are supervised by an appropriate communication professional.
The internship is a reciprocal arrangement: Students exchange their work in return for on-the-job training and work experience and therefore, the on-the-job supervisor should make available a professional learning experience/opportunity beyond clerical duties. If a student is already employed in a communication-related job, internship credit cannot be granted for continuation of that same activity. Students cannot duplicate the same internship for credit in the future. Additionally, credit received for this internship cannot be applied to any other major or degree requirement outside of the School of Communication.
Students must be an admitted major to the School of Communication and should apply for an internship after they have completed a substantial portion of, if not all, the relevant coursework at FSU. Students should check with their assigned faculty advisor prior to securing an internship to determine whether they have made sufficient progress to begin the internship process.
Internship opportunities are not limited by location. Students may seek out opportunities in Tallahassee, another state and even international opportunities.
*The internship carries from 1 to 12 hours of credit which translates into the total number of hours that a student must work for the semester in which they are registered. The student should carefully calculate the number of hours that they should work per week to ensure that the total hour requirement can and will be met.
*The number of credit hours allowed may vary between majors. Consult with your faculty advisor for more information.
*Students are tuition and fee liable for all internship hours added to their schedule.
