Graduate Certificates

We offer three graduate certificates, which may be incorporated into any of our graduate degree programs or taken independently as a “special student” of the university. Our certificates are in Digital Video Production, Project Management and Hispanic Marketing Communication. Read an overview of each program below, and find links for more information.

Digital Video Production

May 2013: The School of Communication regrets to announce that we are suspending the Digital Video Certificate. We will continue to offer a small number of graduate seats in some of our Media Production courses and students may be able to apply these courses to their programs of study (contact your Graduate Coordinator). Unfortunately, students will no longer be able to combine these courses into a certificate. We hope to resurrect the Digital Video Certificate within a few years as resources improve. Students who have already been admitted to the certificate program will be allowed to complete it with course work in Fall 2013 and Spring 2014.

This certificate will provide students with the fundamental skills of digital video production. The skills will include competence with a range of digital video cameras, microphones, basic lighting principles and non-linear editing software. In addition, students will learn the principles of visual storytelling and narrative construction.

Multicultural Marketing Communication

The 2010 U.S. Census documents that three minority groups — Hispanics, African-Americans and Asians — account for about 37% of the total U.S. population and that in many major metropolitan areas, they are now the majority. Estimates vary but at some point between 2030 and 2050, these minorities together will constitute the majority of the total U.S. population. Further, they account for almost three trillion dollars of buying power. Other groups, including Native Americans and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender people, further enrich the cultural and economic landscape of the U.S. The interests of all these minorities, however, have not been well-incorporated in advertising and marketing plans. And, there is a current vacuum in U.S. industry of professionals who understand how to address diverse markets, including basic areas of knowledge such as demographics, consumer insights and behavior, segmentation, cultural archetypes and media behaviors. The Certificate in Multicultural Marketing Communication is designed to bridge the void by offering graduate students and professionals in industry the opportunity to learn about and work effectively with all these groups.

Project Management

The certificate program offers an interdisciplinary approach to the study of Project Management. In order to accomplish this task, the courses that are incorporated in the program come from a variety of departments with core focuses in: Communication, Education, Industrial Engineering, Management, and Management Information Systems. Students completing this course of study will add to their professional repertoire a set of knowledge, processes, tools and techniques that will allow them to successfully plan and execute projects of various sizes.
